Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What is the WirelessHD™ Consortium? Who are the members?
Broadcom Corporation, Intel Corporation, LG Electronics Inc., Panasonic Corporation, NEC Corporation, SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS CO., LTD., SiBEAM, Inc., Sony Corporation and Toshiba Corporation, have joined to form the WirelessHD™ Consortium. WirelessHD™ is a special interest group dedicated to creating the next universal interoperable specification for a multi-gigabit wireless high-definition digital interface for consumer electronics and personal computer and portable products ranging from HDTVs, set top boxes to DVD players, gaming consoles, cameras and more.

2.  Why was the WirelessHD™ Consortium formed?
The purpose of the WirelessHD™ Consortium is to facilitate technical advancement in a wireless high definition digital interface in order to simplify high-definition A/V transmission and high definition content portability for consumers. With the proliferation of digital devices in the home, along with the increasing availability of higher resolution high-definition content, consumers are seeking ways to transfer content among these devices, playing it back and taking it with them. WirelessHD™ will reward consumers with this flexibility, enabling consumers to simply connect and control multiple devices.

3.  Is the WirelessHD™ specification available now?

4.  Why did the CE manufacturers choose WirelessHD™
CE manufacturers are ready to integrate wireless into their products and the WirelessHD™ effort is the
first to drive a specification that fully meets consumer electronic and personal computing manufacturer requirements noted below:

5.  What are the goals and objectives for the WirelessHD™ Consortium?
CE manufacturers are ready to integrate wireless into their products and WirelessHD is the first effort to drive a specification that fully meets CE manufacturer requirements noted below:

6.  How is WirelessHD™ technology different from other technologies that enable wireless distribution of video, audio and data?
WirelessHD™ is the first and only effort to drive a specification that has a combination of the following attributes:

7.What will a new WirelessHD™ specification make possible for consumers?
The specifcation will provide consumers with seamless, wireless connectivity between digital source devices including, DVD players, portable games, digital cameras, digital A/V players, personal computers and digital video recorders and their HDTVs or other display devices, allowing users to quickly and easily share content between devices without the confusion of cables.

For example, a simple scenario is the home entertainment center, which today typically includes an HDTV, a cable box, DVD player, DVR and most likely 1-2 other devices. In this example, a customer can place their devices within the room, turn them on, and they can all connect to each other. There are no wires to exchange, no switches to purchase in order to be able to connect all of these devices. Customers will be able to enjoy their favorite shows and videos as they are wirelessly transmitted to the HDTV.

8.   Who can join WirelessHD™?
All consumer electronics manufacturers and technology companies involved in creating wireless high definition products and services are eligible. Interested parties should visit the “Inquiries” link at www.WirelessHD.org or email: info@WirelessHD.org

9.  Will there be content protection on WirelessHD™?
WirelessHD™ employs an approved, standard content protection scheme in accordance with major motion picture studio requirements. After working with several content provider entities over the last 2 years including the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and Hollywood studios and considering their requirements, the WirelessHD(TM) Consortium has thoughtfully chosen Digital Transmission Content Protection Protocol (DTCP).

10.  What is Digital Transmission Content Protection?
Digital Transmission Content Protection ("DTCP") technology protects high-value digital motion pictures, television programs and audio against unauthorized interception and copying in the home and personal environment (e.g., between a digital set top box and digital video recorder, or between a personal computer and a digital TV). The WirelessHD™ Consortium has worked closely with content providers, such as Hollywood movie studios, to select this standard form of content protection to be used in conjunction with the WirelessHD™ 1.0 specification.

11.  What is the range of WirelessHD™?
The goal range for the first products will be in-room, point-to-point, non line-of-sight (NLOS) at up to 10 meters. The data rate is up to 4Gbps.

12.  Who may have access to the WirelessHD™ 1.0 specification?
At this time, the WirelessHD™ 1.0 specification will only be available to qualified WirelessHD™ Adopters who have executed the Adopter Agreement.

13. Do I have to become an Adopter in order to obtain the specification?
At this time, the WirelessHD 1.0 spec will only be available to qualified WirelessHD Adopters who have executed the Adopter Agreement.

14.   What is the cost of becoming an Adopter?
Currently, the Adopter annual fee is $5k.

15.   When can consumers expect WirelessHD based products to show up on retail shelves?
WirelessHD as a standard setting entity, may not comment on the product plans of its members, however, we anticipate that the WirelessHD compliance test specification to be ready in early 2009 and that there will be products to test soon afterward.

16.   How will customers know that product is WirelessHD™ compliant?
